Home Landing page mix of copy visuals and moving image

Mollie McMillen is a professional basketmaker, bark, and plant weaver with over 16 years of experience in preserving traditional weaving techniques.

Her website needed to showcase her diverse offerings from collaborative garden design projects to her specialised willow coffin making, while providing an effective platform for selling her workshops. This custom website bridges her traditional craftsmanship with contemporary digital presence, supporting her rebrand and creating new opportunities for her business.

Website Challenges for a Basket Maker

Before our collaboration, Mollie struggled with an outdated online presence that no longer served her evolving business

  • Her WordPress site was difficult to manage and provided a poor user experience

  • The content had become irrelevant to her current business focus and offerings

  • Her workshop booking system wasn't optimised for converting interested visitors

  • The site failed to showcase the breadth of her expertise and unique skills in willow coffin making

"My old website was no longer relevant to what I now do with my business. I was using WordPress which I found really hard to use. My website was also clunky and difficult to manage and didn't give an enjoyable user experience. It did not showcase all the current elements of my business and had lots of irrelevant and outdated information."

Custom Basket Maker Website Solution

Working collaboratively with Mollie, I designed a custom Squarespace website that supported her rebrand while addressing her specific business needs

Workshop Sales System - Developed an intuitive e-commerce platform specifically optimised for selling basketry workshops, with detailed course information and straightforward booking functionality.

Craft Narrative Development - Created content that authentically communicates Mollie's role as a guardian of traditional weaving techniques while highlighting her contemporary applications and collaborations for interiors, exteriors and coffins.

Visual Craft Showcase - Designed a visual system that effectively displays the texture, form, and craftsmanship of Mollie's basket making and willow weaving, emphasising the materiality of her work.

Service Clarity - Structured the site to distinctly present each of her service offerings—from exterior weaving services i.e garden designer collaborations to willow coffin making—with tailored customer journeys for each.

Collaborative Design Process

Our partnership went beyond website development to include strategic business mentoring

  • Analysed her target audience and business segments to create a tailored digital experience

  • Used customer profiling to effectively target her ideal clients for her offerings within her business model

  • Audited and unified brand imagery to create a cohesive visual identity

  • Designed with a nature-inspired colour palette and elegant typography that reflects her craft

  • Ensured mobile optimisation for seamless browsing across all devices

Website Results & Business Impact

The new website has significantly elevated Mollie's business profile and opportunities

  • Attracted international attention from prestigious organisations in her field

  • Increased workshop bookings substantially after launch

  • Positioned her work more effectively against competitors in her specialised craft

  • Provided a platform that authentically represents the quality of her craftsmanship

"Almost immediately after the website launch, a company in the States singled me out among 160 other basket makers. They said my website stood out against the 160 other basket makers they were comparing me to! I have also had significantly more bookings onto my courses."

"Working with Emma was transformational. Not only did she create a beautiful digital platform to showcase my craft, she is highly skilled at coaching and helped me to rethink how I sell myself, my products and my own approach to my business."

After project completion, clients receive training for self-updates, so live website content may differ from my original design.
